Registered Apprenticeship is an industry-led training program combining on-the-job learning, mentorship, related instruction, and progressive wages. Apprentices earn a nationally recognized credential while gaining skills for high-demand jobs. Programs are registered through ApprenticeshipNC, the State Apprenticeship Agency for North Carolina, housed within the North Carolina Community College System.
Youth apprenticeship is a registered apprenticeship program that starts when an individual is in high school. Youth apprenticeships are available to students beginning at age 16 and offer a potential career path with continued employment after high school graduation. Youth Apprenticeship allows youth to jump-start their chosen career paths while helping employers create a sustainable talent pipeline.
Youth Pre-Apprenticeships are programs designed to help students succeed in Registered Apprenticeship programs. These short-term programs broaden the youth participants' career prospects by incorporating key elements of registered apprenticeships. At the program's end, both the sponsoring organization and the pre-apprentice may choose to continue their relationship or part ways. If they continue, the pre-apprentice can transition into an apprenticeship program.
High school students who complete a qualifying pre-apprenticeship program and enroll in a registered apprenticeship within 120 days of graduation are eligible for a tuition waiver at a community college. This incentive supports a smooth transition from high school to a full-time apprenticeship. Pre-apprenticeship credits can transfer toward apprenticeship requirements, ensuring continuous career advancement. After completing the apprenticeship program, participants have the opportunity to earn an industry certification, a college degree, or both–with minimal out-of-pocket costs.
